About Barranquilla

Special and Industrial Port of Barranquilla, capital of the Department of Atlantico, Colombia. It is located on the west bank of the Magdalena River 7.5 km from its mouth in the Caribbean Sea and it is the fourth most populous city of the country.

In the second half of the nineteenth century it acquires strategic and economic importance to start steam navigation through the Magdalena River, which allowed it to become the main export center of the country until the first half of the twentieth century.

Mariposas Amarillas (Yellow Butterflies)

“El bulevar de las mariposas” it is located in carrera 46 con via 40, where the sculpture “yellow butterfly” make a homage to Nobel prize, Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Since the late nineteenth century until the 1930s, Barranquilla was the main point of entry to Colombia for thousands of immigrants and advances such as aviation, radio and telephone, as well as several sports.

Barranquilla’s population is around 1.2 millions inhabitants, which makes it the fourth most populous city in the country after Bogota, Medellin and Cali. The city is the core of the metropolitan area of Barranquilla, which is also which is also constituted by the municipalities of Soledad, Galapa, Malambo and Puerto Colombia.


The Carnival of Barranquilla is so rich that it was awarded the titles of “National Heritage” by the Colombian Congress, on November 26th, 2001; and “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” by UNESCO (París), on November 7th, 2003.

During Carnival season, the city becomes the stage for a rich exhibit of folklore and tradition that comes alive in an ingenious and spontaneous festivity. The celebration which begin in January and end on Carnival Tuesday before ash Wednesday include many events in which people from all races, creeds and social conditions participate.

The Malecón Avenida del Río, it is a cobblestone pedestrian walkway with open access. It is a site where locals and tourists can enjoy public space and green areas. People can connect with, feel and experience our Magdalena River. It is located on La Loma Island. It starts from the intersection of the extension between Olaya Herrera Avenue and Calle 6; then it goes towards the island, parallel to Magdalena River to Tablaza Bayou, where it ends at a roundabout.

The New touristic Malecón has 270 meters and two levels of riverwalk in front of the Magdalena river, right over the left margin of the great fluvial artery. It is an open sky scenario with ample green areas, arborization, planters, footpaths, benches, illumination and bicycle routes. It is located behind the Puerta de Oro Convention Center.
